The Benefits of Microdermabrasion

What is microdermabrasion, and why would you recommend it to someone?

Microdermabrasion is a procedure that removes the upper layers of skin known as the stratum corneum. This treatment is a form of physical exfoliation that promotes new collagen production, smooths out the skin and helps reverse signs of aging by minimizing scars and smoothing out fine lines. It can improve your skin’s texture and tone and is also used to treat discoloration, sun damage, light scarring and stretch marks. Microdermabrasion is great for all skin types except for those with active skin conditions such as dermatitis, rosacea, open acne lesions, etc.

How is the treatment performed?

Diamond-tip microdermabrasion involves a handheld device that may trigger a mild scratching sensation in addition to slight pressure from the vibrating and suction motions of the device. This treatment is often compared to a mild sandpaper, utilizing a wand with a tip made from natural or synthetic diamond chips. The treatments are relatively quick, averaging about 30-45 minutes per session, and any redness experienced afterward usually disappears within a couple hours.

How often would you recommend someone have microdermabrasion treatments?

Microdermabrasion can be done every other week to target specific issues or once a month for maintaining bright smooth skin, but it all depends on the person’s goals and where their skin health is. I suggest having 6 treatments done, one every 2 weeks, to really see a noticeable difference in the appearance of your skin. If you have pigmentation, scarring or other skin conditions, more treatments will be necessary. Microdermabrasion encourages the skin cycle of exfoliating dead skin cells and stimulating collagen to allow new skin to grow.

What are some of the risks or safety concerns associated with microdermabrasion? And how can those be minimized?

Because microdermabrasion is a non-invasive procedure, the risks are minimal but if you are on any medication such as Accutane, prescription-strength retinol, Retin-A or tretinoin, you may want to avoid this treatment. Using these kinds of products makes your skin extra sensitive, and microdermabrasion may be too aggressive.

How should someone care for his or her skin after a microdermabrasion treatment?

Because your skin will be more sensitive to sun exposure due to the exfoliation, the use of sunblock and moisturizers is key to help with the benefits of the treatment and to avoid any sun damage or scarring. No scrubs or other exfoliation products should be used for 72 hours after the treatment as well
